Our scents are blends made from vendors who don't sacrifice health & safety for good smells.

All our fragrance oils are made while avoiding these 5 main hazard groups.

✖ Carcinogens: These are materials known or thought to cause cancer.

✖ Mutagens: Materials that change the DNA of a cell, harming the cell and causing diseases like cancer.

✖ Reproductive toxins: Toxins that adversely affect reproductive organs and increase the risk of birth defects.

✖ Organ toxins: These are toxins that can cause adverse effects or disease within specific bodily organs.

✖ Acute toxins: Toxins that can cause adverse effects from a single exposure. Generally, this would be accidental exposure like spillage or ingestion.

Via CandleScience, where we source majority of our fragrance oils:
Fragrance oils are concentrated liquid scents used to add aromas to a vast array of products like candles, soaps, perfumes, cosmetics, lotions, detergents, household cleaners, and more.

So what are fragrance oils made of?

Our fragrance oils are a combination of natural essential oils, synthetic aroma chemicals, solvents, and diluents. The final fragrance oils are never diluted, so each has a strong and concentrated aroma that doesn't disappear when burned in a candle.

While fragrance oils contain natural components like essential oils, they are considered synthetic. However, the beauty of working with synthetic fragrance oils is that they are formulated to be safe in final products and perform consistently (unlike essential oils that can, in some cases, experience fragrance shifts, especially when burned in candles.)

Safety recommendations for pets should be obtained from a veterinarian for personalized advice. (I'm not a vet, just a lady who makes candles as cleanly and sustainably as possible)

Some tips on candles & pets that I have learned over the years:

Please use caution when using flammable or hot items around animals, especially those who are curious.

For burning safety, our candles are crafted with 100% soy wax, cotton wicks, and clean fragrances. You can learn more about our clean fragrances on our FAQ & Care page.

Use discretion when burning candles near pets. Burn in a well ventilated area and out of reach of your pets.

Ingesting candle wax can cause digestive discomfort for pets, so storing candles securely out of reach is advised, such as in a drawer or closed cabinet.

What about incense?
When it comes to incense, it is typically not recommended to use around pets, regardless of where you purchase them from.

Use at your own discretion, you know your home and pets more than I do.

Our candles, wax melts, and all fragrances are considered vegan. Neither we nor our suppliers engage in animal testing.

All our fragrances are phthalate free. Phthalates are used to dissolve raw materials in apothecary goods, medicine, and fragrances. Recently there has been concern linking high levels of phthalates to health issues, especially in children. While there are no regulations against phthalate use in candles, we decided not to work with fragrances with phthalates in them. The levels of phthalates typically found in a candle are not harmful to a consumer or manufacturer, but we decided that simpler is always better.

Via CandleScience, where we source majority of our fragrance oils:

As of August 2019, 100% of our fragrance oils are formulated without phthalates

We've always adhered to the strict RIFM (Research Institute for Fragrance Materials) standard regarding fragrance safety. But we also think these safety standards could go even further, and in July 2020, we announced our CandleScience Clean Scents™ initiative.

CandleScience Clean Scents™ are fragrance oils that avoid carcinogens, toxins, and other hazardous chemicals commonly found in fragrance oils. While our entire line of fragrance oils are non-toxic when used for their intended purpose and in approved percentages, CandleScience Clean Scents gives you the peace of mind of working with the safest supplies available.
